Varric is a surface dwarf, youngest son of the Tethras family, living in the city of Kirkwall in the Free Marches. His brother's in charge of the family businesses. If you asked most people who know him casually what he did for a living, they'd shrug and look at you blankly, or say he talks people into buying him drinks in exchange for wild stories. If you asked people who know him well, they'd point out that there's a lot of power in knowing quite as many people as Varric does, and a storyteller who has enough ears to bend is a man in an excellent position indeed, especially when it comes to the troubles of a family in the Dwarven Merchants Guild.

His crossbow is named Bianca. She's almost as big as he is. You can ask about the name if you like, but you won't get an answer.
